Shingle prices rise sharply

Higher crude oil prices have sent the cost of roofing materials up dramatically over the past two years, industry experts say. Roofing experts say the price of 100 square feet of asphalt shingles has climbed from $45 in 2007 to $86 in 2009. Paving projects funded by the stimulus plan have also increased demand for asphalt and pushed prices higher, they note.

Column: Proper care can extend life of wood shingles

Wood roofs can turn to gray in as little as five years as the sun strips them of their natural resins, write James Carey and Morris Carey. Oil-based and water-based preservatives can restore the natural oils in the wood fibers and protect the wood from ultraviolet rays, they note. Most preservatives will last five years. Keeping the roof clean will also extend the life of the preservative, they write.

Colleges, universities embrace green building

Many colleges and universities across the U.S. are including green building in back-to-school activities. For example, Arizona State University is retrofitting 10,214 lighting fixtures to save energy, and Colorado College is making use of wind energy and low-VOC paints. According to the Princeton Review's Green College rankings, 30% more schools are participating in green initiatives this year than were last year.
