Consumers becoming more optimistic about the future

The consumer confidence index jumped almost 7 points in August, according to The Conference Board, a research group. However, "consumers were more upbeat in their short-term outlook for both the economy and the job market ... but only slightly more upbeat in their income expectations," said Lynn Franco of The Conference Board. "As long as earnings continue to weigh heavily on consumers' minds, spending is likely to remain constrained."
